Laura Fayer is a painter living and working in New York City. She is the recipient of a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and has exhibited in galleries nationally and internationally for over 25 years.

Fayer’s mixed media paintings evoke an ephemeral natural world, poised in a delicate balance between dynamism and tranquility, movement and harmony. She uses handmade stencils and stamps to print patterns and lines onto very thin Japanese paper which is then applied to the canvas in layers and painted over with acrylic medium. The paper dissolves into transparency with only the printed marks remaining, interspersed with rich swathes of acrylic paint. Throughout this process, the surface of the canvas undergoes numerous changes, revisions, additions, and overlays. The resulting effect creates a world in flux where printed images float and weave in harmony among the painted washes of color.

Fayer is the daughter of an Economics professor whose specialty was Japan. Her family, including her parents and six siblings, lived in Tokyo for a few years, and her work is influenced by the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi which is defined by impermanence, imperfection, visual economy, and intimacy.

Fayer was awarded grants from International Residencies for Artists and the Massachusetts Cultural Council for a fellowship to live and work at Triangle France in Marseille and she was in residence at Baer Arts Center in Iceland in 2019. She has also been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art and has traveled in South America, Asia, and Africa.
